Hi, I’m Mary and this is Karina. We’re with Aquatic Adventures in Roanoke and today, we’re going to talk about how to practice the freestyle kick in the water. Karina’s going to come against the wall over here and she’s going to put her hands up against the wall and she’s going to push her legs up in getting into a float position. What she’s going to do is start a nice, easy kick. The freestyle kick is initiated from the hips. She starts pressing down with her legs. We want to have a nice straight leg with pointed toes; but, we want to have a relaxed knee, not a bent knee. That’s key. We press down with our feet to push the water down away. Oftentimes people think that they’re lifting out of the water, but, we’re actually pressing down into the water. We don’t want to have a lot of air; we want to be using most of the feet in the water. An, an efficient kick with our freestyle helps maintain proper body position and helps us to maintain the speed that we have when we’re using our arms. And that’s the freestyle kick in the water.
